ABOUT ADRIAN

Adrian was born in 1989 in Holguin, Cuba and immigrated to the US at age 13. The Cuban-born muralist has roots to South Florida dating back to his days at New World School of Arts, a small, selective, nationally recognized magnet school. Eventually, he earned a scholarship to attend Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where he received his bachelor’s degree. Out of college, he started working primarily in editorial illustrations for companies such as Disney and Warner Brothers. A few years later, Avila moved to Wynwood, Miami to build the foundations of his art career. In his thirties, he is now one of the more prolific painters in Miami’s art district, having created over 30 murals in Wynwood and surrounding areas.

His studio practice is rooted in an exploration of the timeless self and its relation to the collective consciousness. It draws strongly on his experiences as a Cuban-American who lived different degrees of indoctrination throughout life relating to the expression of femininity, knowledge, and power. As a visual anthropologist he aims to catalogue his journey of unlearning social paradigms while connecting to his spirituality as he creates a new visual language for the examination of emotions. The visual language is represented by texture, symbols, linear patterns and sacred geometric shapes that represent movement, all connect to illuminate the parallel light that travels in the depths of the discovery of the self.
